WHAT THE JOB INVOLVES:

Exterminators, under general supervision, perform work in the prevention, control, and elimination of insects, vermin and other pests from buildings and surrounding areas including parks; inspect areas of infestation; use the most effective insecticides, rodenticides, baits, traps, etc., for exterminating pests as required; keep records of equipment usage, work schedules, and exterminating operations performed; and may drive a motor vehicle. All Exterminators perform related work.

Special Working Conditions:

Exterminators may be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Some of the physical activities performed by Exterminators and environmental conditions experienced are: walking to and from inspection sites during inspections, standing for an extended period of time, bending and stooping during inspections, working in confined areas, using bait and traps, and preparing insecticides and rodenticides for exterminating pests.
(This is a brief description of what you might do in this position and does not include all the duties of this position.)

THE SALARY:

The current minimum salary is $48,154 per annum. This rate is subject to change. There are three assignment levels within this class of positions. Appointments will generally be made to Assignment Level I. After appointment, employees may be assigned to the higher assignment levels at the discretion of the agency.

HOW TO QUALIFY:

It is your responsibility to determine whether or not you meet the qualification requirements for this examination before submitting your application. If you are found "Not Qualified," your application fee will not be refunded and you will not receive a score.
 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Certification Requirement: By September 30, 2026, you must have:

A valid certificate as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator for Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Rodent Control (7A) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This certification must be maintained for the duration of employment.

You will not receive credit for a certification which you obtain after September 30, 2026.

You must final submit your Education and Experience Exam in OASys by midnight Eastern time on the last day of the Application Period, and once you Final Submit, no changes can be made.

Failure to click Final Submit by the deadline will result in an incomplete application, and you will not receive a score or a refund of the application fee.

Driver License Requirement: For appointment to certain positions, possession of a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York may be required. If you have moving violations, license suspension(s) or an accident record, you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

Residency Requirement Advisory:

Under New York City Administrative Code Section 12-120, you might need to be a resident of the City of New York within 90 days of the date you are appointed to this position. Since residency requirements vary by title, appointing agency and length of service, consult the appointing agency's personnel office at the time of the appointment interview to find out if City residency is required.

English Requirement:

You must be able to understand and be understood in English.

Proof of Identity:

Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, you must be able to prove your identity and your right to obtain employment in the United States prior to employment with an agency under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner, Department of Citywide Administrative Services.

The DCAS Computer-based Testing & Application Centers will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026.

 

Application Receipt:

After applying for the examination through the Online Application System (OASys), expect an immediate receipt via email. If you don't see it, be sure to check your Junk, Trash, or Spam folders. Alternatively, you can view a summary of your application status on your OASys Dashboard under "Notifications."

If you still can't find the email, contact DCAS at nyc.gov/CivilServiceNowNYC and select the applicable subject. Include your exam number and profile number for easier identification. Also, verify that your email address in your profile is accurate and up to date. Finally, add OASys@dcas.nyc.gov to your known senders to ensure you receive all important communications.
 
This examination is for positions with City agencies only, and not the City University of New York (CUNY). If you would like to apply for the open competitive examination for Exterminator with CUNY, you must submit a separate application and fee for Exam No. 7035 from September 2, 2026 through September 22, 2026.

REQUIRED INFORMATION:

THE TEST:

Your score will be determined by an Education and Experience Exam. You will receive a score of 70 points for meeting the qualification requirements listed in the "How to Qualify" section. Experience used to gain additional credit must be obtained by the last day of the Application Period (September 22, 2026).  Certificates must be obtained by September 30, 2026.

During the Education and Experience Exam (EEE), you will get instructions on converting part-time experience to the full-time equivalent.

You must Final Submit your Education and Experience Exam in OASys by midnight Eastern time on the last day of the Application Period, and once you Final Submit, no changes can be made.

THE TEST RESULTS:

If you pass the Education and Experience Exam, your name will be placed on an eligible list in final score order. You will receive a list number and be notified of your test results via email. This eligible list determines the order of candidates considered for appointment, usually active for four years.

Selective Certification for Special Experience, Certifications, or License: If you have the experience, certifications and/or license listed in one or more of the areas below, you may be considered for appointment to positions requiring this experience, certifications and/or license through a process called Selective Certification. If you qualify for Selective Certification, you may be given preferred consideration for positions requiring this experience, certifications and/or license. If you wish to apply for Selective Certification, follow the onscreen instructions when completing the Education and Experience Exam to indicate your interest in such Selective Certification and Final Submit it in the Online Application System (OASys). Your experience, certifications and/or license will be checked by the appointing agency at the time of appointment.

  1. Municipal Government Experience (MGE): At least one (1) year of satisfactory full-time experience working within a municipal government in a similar position, which provides services for a city with over 1 million in population.
  2. Federal Government Experience (FGE): At least one (1) year of satisfactory, full-time experience working within the federal government of the United States in a similar position.
  3. AmeriCorps (AMC): Successful completion of at least ten (10) months of satisfactory, full-time experience as a NYC Service AmeriCorps member at a City agency or non-profit organization, which includes 100+ hours of workforce preparedness trainings.
  4. Civil Service Pathways Fellowship (FEL): Successful completion of at least one (1) year of the Civil Service Pathways Fellowship program.
  5. Driver License (MVO): A motor vehicle Driver License that is valid in the State of New York. If you are appointed through Selective Certification, you must maintain your motor vehicle Driver License for the duration of your employment.
  6. Positions Requiring Certification as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator For Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Food Processing (7F) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (CPF): Possession of a valid Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator For Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Food Processing (7F) certification issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
  7. Certification as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator for Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Food Processing (7F) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and a Driver License (CPV): Possession of a valid Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator for Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Food Processing (7F) certification issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and a motor vehicle driver license that is valid in the State of New York.
  8. Positions Requiring Experience Working in the Pest Control Program of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (EPC): At least 6 (six) months of full-time satisfactory experience working in the Pest Control Program of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
