WHAT THE JOB INVOLVES:

Exterminators (CUNY), under general supervision, perform work in the prevention, control, and elimination of insects, vermin and other pests from buildings and surrounding areas including parks; inspect areas of infestation; use the most effective insecticides, rodenticides, baits, traps, etc., for exterminating pests as required; keep records of equipment usage, work schedules, and exterminating operations performed; and may drive a motor vehicle. All Exterminators (CUNY) perform related work.

Special Working Conditions:

Exterminators (CUNY) may be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Some of the physical activities performed by Exterminators (CUNY) and environmental conditions experienced are: walking to and from inspection sites during inspections, standing for an extended period of time, bending and stooping during inspections, working in confined areas, using bait and traps, and preparing insecticides and rodenticides for exterminating pests.

THE SALARY:

The current minimum salary is $39,922 per annum. This rate is subject to change.

HOW TO QUALIFY:

You are responsible for determining whether or not you meet the qualification requirements for this examination prior to submitting your application. If you are found "Not Qualified," your application fee will not be refunded and you will not receive a score.
 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Certification Requirement: By September 30, 2026 you must have:

  1. A valid certificate as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator for Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Rodent Control (7A) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; or
  2. Successful completion of a pesticide application course which is acceptable to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for meeting the requirements to apply for a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate for Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Rodent Control (7A). However, all candidates will be required to obtain a valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate for Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Rodent Control (7A) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation within 12 months of the date of appointment.

The certificate must be maintained for the duration of employment.

You must final submit your Education and Experience Exam in OASys by midnight Eastern time on the last day of the Application Period, and once you Final Submit, no changes can be made.

Failure to click Final Submit by the deadline will result in an incomplete application, and you will not receive a score or a refund of the application fee.

Residency: City residency is not required for this position.

English Requirement:

You must be able to understand and be understood in English.

Proof of Identity:

Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, you must be able to prove your identity and your right to obtain employment in the United States prior to employment with the City University of New York.

The DCAS Computer-based Testing & Application Centers will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026.
 

Application Receipt:

After applying for the examination through the Online Application System (OASys), expect an immediate receipt via email. If you don't see it, be sure to check your Junk, Trash, or Spam folders. Alternatively, you can view a summary of your application status on your OASys Dashboard under "Notifications."

If you still can't find the email, contact DCAS at NYC.gov/CivilServiceNowNYC and select the applicable subject. Include your exam number and profile number for easier identification. Also, verify that your email address in your profile is accurate and up to date. Finally, add OASys@dcas.nyc.gov to your known senders to ensure you receive all important communications.
 
This examination is for positions with the City University of New York (CUNY) only, and not City Agencies. If you would like to apply for the open competitive examination for Exterminator with City Agencies, you must submit a separate application and fee for Exam No. 7034 from September 2, 2026 through September 22, 2026.

REQUIRED INFORMATION:

Experience used to gain additional credit must be obtained by the last day of the Application Period (September 22, 2026). Certificates used to gain additional credit must be obtained by September 30, 2026.

During the Education and Experience Exam (EEE), you will get instructions on converting part-time experience to the full-time equivalent.

You must Final Submit your Education and Experience Exam in OASys by midnight Eastern time on the last day of the Application Period, and once you Final Submit, no changes can be made.

THE TEST RESULTS:

If you pass the Education and Experience Exam, your name will be placed on a CUNY eligible list in final score order. You will receive a list number and be notified of your test results via email. This eligible list determines the order of candidates considered for appointment.
 
 
If you believe your test was rated incorrectly, you can appeal your score to DCAS, Committee on Manifest Errors, using the Online Application System (OASys). Your appeal must clearly state the reasons for requesting a higher score and may result in a different rating.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Appointment of New York City Civil Service Employees: Please note that CUNY is a separate municipal employer; therefore, employees of New York City agencies cannot transfer to CUNY. If an employee of a New York City agency accepts a position with CUNY, the employee's date of appointment for the purposes of salary, seniority, and time and leave accruals is his/her date of appointment to CUNY.

Selective Certification for Certification or License: If you have the certification and/or license listed in one or more of the areas below, you may be considered for appointment to positions requiring this certification and/or license through a process called Selective Certification. If you qualify for Selective Certification, you may be given preferred consideration for positions requiring this certification and/or license. If you wish to apply for Selective Certification, follow the onscreen instructions when completing the Education and Experience Exam to indicate your interest in such Selective Certification and Final Submit it in the Online Application System (OASys).   1. Driver License (MVO): A motor vehicle Driver License that is valid in the State of New York. If you are appointed through Selective Certification, you must maintain your motor vehicle Driver License for the duration of your employment.
  2. Positions Requiring Certification as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator For Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Food Processing (7F) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (CPF): Possession of a valid Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator For Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Food Processing (7F) certification issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The above Selective Certification requirements may be met at any time during the duration of the list. List Termination:

The eligible list resulting from this examination will be terminated one year from the date it is established, unless extended by CUNY.
